Can I train around my current job?

Yes — you absolutely can train to become a driving instructor around your current job. In fact, many people do it this way. The DVSA qualification process is flexible, and most training providers offer part-time, evening, and weekend options to fit around work or other commitments.

Part 1 – Theory Test

  • Self-study using online platforms, books, and mock tests
  • Study in your own time (evenings, weekends, commutes)
  • No classroom time required
  • Book the test when you're ready — centres open weekdays & some Saturdays

Time needed: 2 – 4 weeks (part-time)

Part 2 – Driving Ability

  • One-to-one sessions with a trainer
  • Flexible timings: early mornings, evenings, or weekends
  • Most people need 10 – 20 hours of training

Time needed: 1 – 2 months part-time

Part 3 – Instructional Ability

  • 40 hours of instructional practice (flexible scheduling)
  • Apply for a trainee licence after Part 2
  • Teach real pupils & earn while training
  • Build experience before the final Part 3 test

Time needed: 2 – 6 months part-time
